Wo-Chien Competitive Guide: Tablets of Ruin, Best Sets, and Counters

Wo-Chien is the most underrated of the four Treasures of Ruin. While Chien-Pao gets all the offensive attention, Wo-Chien quietly provides a bulky Grass/Dark defensive backbone with one of the best abilities for walling physical attackers. This guide covers its stats, Tablets of Ruin, and the sets that make it work.

Base Stats Breakdown

StatValueNotes
HP85Decent bulk
Attack85Modest — not the point
Defense100Strong physical wall
Sp. Atk95Usable special attacking option
Sp. Def135Elite special wall
Speed70Slow but not the slowest

135 Special Defense is the headline number. Wo-Chien can switch into almost any special attacker in the game and take the hit comfortably, then recover or fire back.

Tablets of Ruin Explained

Wo-Chien’s ability, Tablets of Ruin, reduces the Attack stat of every other Pokémon on the field by 25%. This is a flat multiplier applied to the raw stat, meaning it weakens opposing physical attackers in a way that cannot be undone by switching or by stat boosts alone.

  • It affects both opponents in doubles — a team-wide defensive buff
  • It does not affect your own Wo-Chien, so it can still attack normally
  • It stacks with Intimidate for a devastating physical shutdown
  • It does NOT reduce damage from fixed-damage moves like Seismic Toss

The Standard Set

  • Wo-Chien @ Leftovers or Assault Vest
  • Ability: Tablets of Ruin
  • Tera Type: Poison or Water
  • Foul Play / Giga Drain / Leech Seed / Taunt or Protect
  • EVs: 252 HP, 252 Sp. Def, 4 Defense — Calm nature

Foul Play is the key move: it uses the target’s Attack stat against them, which pairs perfectly with Tablets of Ruin weakening the target’s Attack in the first place. Leech Seed provides passive recovery and forces switches.

Why Assault Vest Works

With an Assault Vest, Wo-Chien’s already enormous Special Defense goes even higher, letting it wall special attackers that would otherwise break through bulky Grass-types. The tradeoff is you lose access to Leech Seed and Taunt, so choose the item based on whether you need recovery or pure bulk.

Teammates That Synergize

  • Intimidate users: Incineroar or Arcanine stack physical attack reduction
  • Chien-Pao: the opposite Treasure of Ruin, covering offensive pressure
  • Fairy-types: cover Wo-Chien’s 4x Bug weakness only indirectly — better to use Steel
  • Slow pivots: Wo-Chien is slow, so Teleport and U-turn partners help it enter safely

Counters and Weaknesses

  • Bug-types: a 4x weakness is fatal — keep Wo-Chien away from U-turn and Bug Buzz
  • Fairy-types: 2x weakness to Fairy, common coverage move
  • Fighting-types: 2x weakness, and Close Combat ignores the Attack drop
  • Taunt: shuts down Leech Seed and forces Wo-Chien to attack

Verdict

Wo-Chien is a specialist, not a generalist. Build it as a special wall that also blunts physical attackers through Tablets of Ruin, give it Foul Play so it is not passive, and it will hold the line against almost any special offense in the format.
