How Pokémon Breeding Works

Breeding lets you produce eggs from compatible Pokémon at the Day Care (or Nursery in later games). Two Pokémon of the same Egg Group — or a Ditto paired with almost anything — will eventually produce an egg containing the female’s species (or the non-Ditto parent’s species). This is the core of competitive team building, shiny hunting, and filling your Pokédex.

How to Hatch Eggs Faster in Every Generation

Egg hatching requires walking a set number of steps, and a few tricks speed it up dramatically. The most important is having a Pokémon with the Flame Body or Magma Armor ability (Magmar, Talonflame, Volcarona, and others) in your party — it halves the step count for every egg in your party. In Scarlet and Violet, this stacks with the Sandwich power “Egg Power” for even faster hatching.

Egg step counts vary by species, and the cycle counter (which resets every 255 steps) means you need 20-40 loops depending on the Pokémon. Hatch Power sandwiches, a Flame Body lead, and a long straight route are the three keys to fast hatching in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Breeding for IVs, Natures, and Shiny Pokémon

Breeding is the best way to get perfect competitive Pokémon. The Destiny Knot passes down 5 IVs from the parents, the Everstone passes down the holder’s Nature, and Power items guarantee one specific IV. With a 6-IV Ditto and the right items, you can produce flawless offspring quickly. Shiny odds also improve with the Masuda Method: breeding two Pokémon from different language games raises the shiny chance to roughly 1 in 683 (about 1 in 512 with the Shiny Charm in modern games).
