How to Catch Groudon in Pokémon Emerald
Groudon is the Continental Pokémon and one of the two version mascots of the Hoenn region. In Pokémon Emerald, catching it is part of the main story rather than a post-game side quest, so you cannot miss it — but the fight is genuinely tough if you are underprepared. This guide covers exactly where to go, what level to expect, and the best team to bring.
Where to Find Groudon
In Emerald, Groudon appears automatically as part of the story after you defeat Team Magma at the Seafloor Cavern. Once the weather over Hoenn turns harsh, head to Sootopolis City and then into the Cave of Origin. Groudon waits at the deepest point of the cave at Level 45.
Note: you must defeat or capture it to progress the story there is no way around the encounter.
Preparation Checklist
| Item | Where to Get It | Why You Need It |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra Balls x20+ | Any Poké Mart | Groudon has a low catch rate |
| Timer Balls x10 | Fallarbor / Lilycove Mart | Best ball after 10+ turns |
| Dusk Balls x10 | Lilycove Mart | Cave of Origin is dark — 3.5x rate |
| Great Balls x20 | Any Poké Mart | Backup for chip catching |
| Hyper Potions x10 | Any Poké Mart | Groudon hits extremely hard |
| Revives x5 | Any Poké Mart | Expect at least one knockout |
Best Team to Bring
Groudon is a pure Ground-type, so Water, Grass and Ice moves all hit it super effectively. Water is the safest choice because Groudon’s strongest moves are physical Ground attacks that your bulky Water-types can tank.
- Swampert (Mud Shot / Surf): resists nothing but has huge HP and a strong Water STAB.
- Wailord: enormous HP makes it a perfect wall for the long catch battle.
- Sceptile: fast Grass attacker that can chip Groudon into the red zone quickly.
- Altaria: a bulky Dragon that can sponge hits and use Sing-style status (via breeding) if available.
Step-by-Step Catch Strategy
- Save before entering the Cave of Origin. If you knock Groudon out or run out of balls, you can reset.
- Weaken, do not KO. Get Groudon down to low HP, ideally under 10%.
- Apply status. Sleep or Paralysis dramatically raise the catch rate. A Pokémon with Spore or Thunder Wave is invaluable.
- Throw balls in order. Use Dusk Balls first (you are in a cave), then switch to Timer Balls once the battle passes ten turns.
- Heal when needed. Groudon’s Earthquake and Slash can two-shot many of your Pokémon keep your wall healthy.
Common Mistakes
- Bringing only Legendaries. High levels do not help; a bulky Water-type with status support works better than a level 70 Rayquaza.
- Using False Swipe without status. It only works down to 1 HP on non-Ghost targets, which is great, but without status the catch rate is still poor.
- Forgetting Dusk Balls. The cave setting makes them the best ball in the game for this encounter.
- No healing items. Groudon can end your run in three turns if you come in unprepared.
After You Catch It
Groudon’s ability Drought summons harsh sunlight, which powers up Fire moves and weakens Water moves. It is a fantastic addition to a sun team and a strong physical attacker for the rest of the Hoenn story. Give it Earthquake, Slash, and Fire Blast for coverage, and consider a Choice Band later in the game.
Final Tips
Treat the Groudon encounter as a puzzle rather than a battle. Your job is not to win — it is to survive long enough to land a ball. Bring bulk, bring status, bring Dusk Balls, and save beforehand.
