How to Catch Giratina in Pokémon Legends: Arceus and BDSP: Locations and Tips

Giratina is one of the most intimidating Legendary Pokémon in the franchise, a Ghost/Dragon from the Distortion World that has appeared in several modern games. Two of the most popular places to catch it are Pokémon Legends: Arceus and the Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl remakes — and both encounters are easy to miss if you do not know where to look. This guide covers the exact location, the requirements, and the best strategy for catching Giratina in each game.

Giratina in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Giratina appears in its Origin Forme and is a post-game encounter. You must first complete the main story and unlock the post-game missions, then head to the Cobalt Coastlands. Giratina is found in Turnback Cave, the eerie cave on the northwestern edge of the map that is only accessible after the post-game begins. Inside, you will face a level 70 Giratina in Origin Forme, and catching it unlocks the legendary Ghost/Dragon for your team.

How to Reach Turnback Cave in Legends: Arceus

  • Finish the main story and accept the post-game requests from Professor Laventon
  • Travel to the Cobalt Coastlands and make your way to the northwestern corner of the map
  • Look for the Turnback Cave entrance near the coast; the area is filled with fog and strong wild Pokémon
  • Inside, follow the path to the deepest chamber where Giratina is waiting
  • Save your game before stepping into the encounter

Because Legends: Arceus uses the new catching system, you can throw Poké Balls directly at Giratina during battle. Weaken it with super-effective moves first, then use status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis to raise your catch rate. Origin Forme Giratina is fast and hits hard, so bring a team around level 65-70 and plenty of Ultra Balls or Gigaton Balls.

Giratina in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Giratina is a post-game Legendary found in Turnback Cave, which you reach through Sendoff Spring on Route 214. You must first obtain the National Dex by seeing every Pokémon in the Sinnoh Dex, then return to Sendoff Spring. The cave contains a short pillar puzzle — walk through the correct sequence of chambers with the glowing red pillars — to reach the Distortion Room, where a level 70 Giratina in Altered Forme awaits. Save before the battle, since Giratina can be difficult to catch and does not respawn quickly if you knock it out.

Best Team and Battle Strategy

Giratina is Ghost/Dragon in both forms, which gives it a useful set of resistances and a nasty STAB combo. Your best attackers are Ice-type Pokémon, since Ice hits Dragon for 4x super-effective damage, and strong Fairy-types, which resist Dragon and deal super-effective damage in return. Dragon-types are a bad idea — Giratina resists Dragon and can hit back hard. Bring a bulky team, keep a few revives handy, and chip Giratina down to red HP before throwing balls.

Origin Forme vs. Altered Forme: What to Know

The form you catch depends on the game. Legends: Arceus gives you Origin Forme Giratina directly, complete with its Levitate-like ability and higher offensive stats. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl give you Altered Forme Giratina, which you can later transform into Origin Forme using the Griseous Core item. Origin Forme is generally the better competitive choice, while Altered Forme is more defensive. Both are excellent additions to a playthrough team thanks to their high base stats and useful typing.
