How to Catch Rayquaza in Pokémon Emerald: Sky Pillar Guide

Rayquaza is the most iconic legendary in Pokémon Emerald, and unlike the box legendaries Groudon and Kyogre, you can catch it with any team at any point after the eighth badge. This guide covers exactly where Rayquaza is, how to reach the Sky Pillar, and the team you need to catch it without wasting Ultra Balls.

Where Rayquaza Appears

Rayquaza sits at the summit of the Sky Pillar, a tower on Route 131 that only becomes accessible after you defeat the Elite Four and complete the Delta Episode storyline. Before that, the entrance is blocked. Once unlocked, you climb the tower to level 70 encounter with a level 70 Rayquaza.

Getting to the Sky Pillar

From Pacifidlog Town, Surf east along Route 131. A small island holds the tower entrance, but you need the Mach Bike to cross the cracked floor tiles inside. Bring the Mach Bike — the Acro Bike will fall through the collapsing panels on the final floors.

  1. Fly or Surf to Pacifidlog Town.
  2. Surf east on Route 131 to the small island.
  3. Enter the Sky Pillar and use the Mach Bike to cross the cracked tiles.
  4. Climb to the roof and step onto the summit.

Best Team to Catch Rayquaza

Rayquaza has 105 base Speed and can sweep a careless team with Dragon Dance. You want a fast Pokémon with False Swipe or a reliable status move, plus a dedicated wall to absorb hits while you throw balls.

Step-by-Step Catch Strategy

  1. Lead with Breloom and use Spore — sleep gives the best catch multiplier.
  2. False Swipe Rayquaza down to exactly 1 HP.
  3. Switch to a bulky wall if sleep wears off; never let it set up Dragon Dance twice.
  4. Throw Ultra Balls, then Timer Balls after 10 turns.

Bring at least 30 Ultra Balls and 5 Timer Balls. Rayquaza is not a guaranteed early catch, and a single full-heal slip can undo an entire attempt. If you are building a full Hoenn team first, our best Emerald team guide shows the optimal lineup, and the Ruby and Sapphire team guide covers differences between versions.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong bike and falling through the tower floors.
  • Knocking Rayquaza out with a strong critical hit — always use False Swipe.
  • Forgetting to save before the encounter — SR if the catch fails.
  • Bringing only physical attackers against Dragon Claw pressure.

Once caught, Rayquaza learns Dragon Dance by level and can be taught Extreme Speed for priority. Our Platinum legendary location guide follows the same catch-method logic if you move on to Sinnoh next.
