Aegislash Stats, Ability and Best Moveset: Stance Change Explained (2026)

Aegislash is one of the most uniquely designed Pokémon in the series: a Steel/Ghost blade that swaps between a defensive shield and an offensive sword form every turn. This guide explains Stance Change, the optimal movesets, and how to use Aegislash in both PvE and competitive play.

How Stance Change Works

Aegislash’s ability Stance Change is what makes it special. It has two forms with drastically different stats:

FormHPAtkDefSpASpDSpe
Shield Form60501405014060
Blade Form60140501405060

When Aegislash uses an attacking move, it shifts into Blade Form. When it uses King’s Shield, it returns to Shield Form. Timing your stance swaps is the entire skill of the Pokémon.

Best Aegislash Moveset

  • King’s Shield — mandatory; reverts to Shield Form and lowers attacker’s Attack on contact
  • Sacred Sword — Fighting coverage that ignores stat boosts
  • Shadow Ball / Shadow Claw — Ghost STAB depending on physical or special build
  • Iron Head / Flash Cannon — Steel STAB
  • Shadow Sneak — priority option to finish weakened foes
  • Swords Dance — physical setup on predicted switches

Physical vs Special Aegislash

Because Blade Form has both 140 Attack and 140 Special Attack, Aegislash can go either way. Physical sets use Sacred Sword and Shadow Claw with a Jolly nature and are more common in singles. Special sets use Flash Cannon and Shadow Ball with a Modest nature and break through physically defensive walls. Choose based on your team’s coverage gaps.

How to Evolve Honedge into Aegislash

Honedge evolves into Doublade at Level 35, then into Aegislash only when exposed to a Dusk Stone. You can find Dusk Stones in Lake of Outrage (Wild Area), on the Stow-on-Side hill, and from the Pokémon GO transfer rewards.

Counters to Aegislash

Aegislash’s Shield Form resists most things, but its weaknesses are Fire, Ground, Ghost and Dark. A fast Dark-type like Absol or a Ghost-type like Chandelure can break through. Note that King’s Shield lowers the attacker’s Attack, so special attackers and status users bypass its main gimmick.
