Egg Groups are the hidden system that decides which Pokémon can breed together in the main series games. Every Pokémon belongs to one or two of 15 Egg Groups, and two Pokémon can only produce eggs if they share at least one group. What Are Egg Groups

Egg Groups were introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver alongside breeding itself. Instead of matching by species, the games match by group. A male Pokémon passes down its Egg Moves and most of its Physical moves, while the female determines the species of the offspring. Ditto is the exception: it can breed with almost any Pokémon regardless of group.

Egg Group Compatibility Chart

Most groups can only breed within themselves, but several cross-compatible pairs unlock powerful chains. Water 1, Water 2, and Water 3 can all interbreed. Field pairs with Grass, Monster pairs with Dragon and Field, Bug pairs with Grass, and Flying pairs with Field. These cross-links are the key to passing exclusive Egg Moves between unrelated Pokémon.

For example, Dragon Dance can be passed from a Dragon-type down through the Monster group to a pseudo-legendary like Tyranitar. Without understanding the compatibility chart, these powerful move combos are impossible to build.

Best Breeding Combinations for Competitive Play

The strongest competitive breeding targets chain moves through multiple generations of parents. A classic example is breeding Extreme Speed onto Dragonite, or passing Aqua Jet onto a Water 1 physical attacker. For each target, you need a male parent from a compatible group that knows the move, then breed down the chain until the move lands on the species you want.

Ditto’s Special Role

Ditto belongs to its own group and can breed with any Pokémon that is not in the Undiscovered group. A Ditto with good IVs is the fastest way to breed competitive offspring, because it can pair with a female of any species you want to duplicate.
