Eternatus is the final boss of Pokémon Sword and Shield and one of the most powerful Dragon/Poison-types ever introduced. This walkthrough covers where to find it, how the Eternamax battle works, and how to add it to your Galar team.
Where to Find Eternatus
Eternatus is encountered automatically during the main story at the Energy Plant at the top of the Hammerlocke Stadium, immediately after you defeat Chairman Rose. You cannot skip or postpone this battle — it triggers as part of the climax of the post-Gym 8 storyline.
- Location: Energy Plant, Hammerlocke
- Trigger: After the Chairman Rose battle
- Level: 60 (Eternatus) — 65+ (Eternamax Eternatus)
- Type: Dragon / Poison
Eternamax Eternatus: The Two-Phase Battle
The fight actually happens in two phases. In the first, you and Hop face Eternatus together. In the second, Eternatus transforms into the colossal Eternamax Eternatus, and you fight alongside Zacian and Zamazenta, who temporarily join your side.
| Phase | Opponent | Key Threat Move | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Eternatus (Lv 60) | Dynamax Cannon | Whittle it down; save Dynamax for Phase 2 |
| Phase 2 | Eternamax Eternatus (Lv 65+) | Eternabeam, Flamethrower | Let Zacian/Zamazenta tank; you attack freely |
Best Team to Bring
Eternatus is weak to Ground, Psychic and Ice. A Ground-type like Groudon or Excadrill is ideal, and an Ice-type like Mamoswine provides strong coverage. Because Zacian and Zamazenta fight beside you in Phase 2, you do not need to solo the Eternamax form — just keep chipping away.
Can You Catch Eternatus?
Yes. After the two-phase battle, Eternatus is left weakened and you can throw a Poké Ball to catch it. This is one of the few scripted guaranteed-ish catches in the game. Eternatus arrives at Level 60 and comes with the ability Pressure.
Eternatus Competitive Overview
With 145 base Special Attack and 130 base Speed, Eternatus is a devastating special sweeper. Its signature move Dynamax Cannon deals double damage to Dynamaxed targets, making it a hard counter to Dynamax strategies. Pair it with a Stealth Rock setter for best results in ranked Sword and Shield battles.
